The vestry of an Episcopal church that has parish (self-supporting) status is the lay organization that is responsible for the parish buildings and grounds (corporate property), and responsible for choosing a rector (chief pastor/minister). The vestry concept evolved from a colonial pattern in America that was based on an English model. The number of vestry members and the term of office varies from parish to parish. At Trinity Church, there are twelve vestry members, including two wardens. Vestry members serve for three years and are usually elected at the parish’s Annual Meeting in January.

Wardens have specific duties—the senior warden leads the parish between rectors and is the chief support person for the rector; the junior warden (often called the “people’s warden) generally has specific responsibility for the buildings and grounds. There is also a Treasurer and a Clerk of the vestry, who may or may not always be vestry members.

The primary responsibilities of the vestry are to assist in defining, articulating, and implementing the parish’s mission; supporting the mission of the church; selecting a new Rector; ensure effective planning and organization; and to manage the parish’s resources and financial affairs.

Trinity Church’s vestry meets the second Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish House. Parish members are welcome to attend. Contact the office (office@trinitychurchashland.org) to confirm times and location. Submit written proposals for vestry action to the rector or parish clerk one week prior to the meeting.
