Sermon – December 18, 2011
Advent IV 2011 Morgan Silbaugh
We stand on tiptoe awaiting Christ’s birth among us. Today we hear from Mary’s point of view the news that the Christ is to be born. A young girl with no husband is greeted by an angel who tells her not to be afraid after declaring that she had found favor with God. How could she not be afraid? How could she not be overwhelmed? How could she not be terrified? Luke reports that she was perplexed, indeed much perplexed by Gabriel’s words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Imagine how much greater her perplexity when promised the miraculous birth of a son to be named Jesus, who will be great and who will be called the Son of the Most HIgh, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. This is no royal princess but a simple peasant girl engaged to a carpenter. Had the angel merely said that in due season, after their marriage, she and Joseph would produce a son who would be great and reign over an eternal kingdom, that alone would seem impossible. But for the child to be conceived by the Holy Spirit…how could it possibly be? And what about Joseph? Matthew’s Gospel gives his side of the story, and reports that he, like the Joseph of the elder testament, is guided by God in his dreams, and reassured that all is well and more than well. He is at first resolved to dismiss Mary quietly rather than expose her to public disgrace. So we know he was kind man. In his dream an angel of the Lord told him that he need not be afraid to take Mary for his wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit, and would be the one to save his people from their sins, And so, Joseph accepts and protects Mary. But it cannot have been easy and the folk of the middle ages were earthy enough, honest enough, human enough, to sing Joseph’s dis ease out loud. The Cherry Tree Carol has a disgruntled Joseph say LET THE FATHER OF THY BABY GATHER CHERRIES FOR THEE. …in response to Mary’s announcement that she is with child and hungers for cherries. Wonderful as the story of Jesus’ birth truly is, we do need to take seriously Mary’s genuine bewilderment, distress, and yes- alarm. Perhaps the great miracle without which none of the other miracles might have occurred is Mary’s YES. Let us not skip blithely off to Christmas without standing in awe of Mary’s genuinely daring HERE I AM, THE SERVANT OF THE LORD; LET IT BE WITH ME ACCORDING TO YOUR WORD. The dicey question for us is whether we are ready willing and able to say and live out the same thing. What the angel asks of Mary, something possible only by the Spirit’s power, is to be the servant of the living God. Less dramatically, to be sure, but is not that our call also? Without angelic coaching, it might well be worth our while to listen for God’s Word, God’s call to us now, in this place. Mary accepted, said yes, said HERE I AM, THE SERVANT OF THE LORD, LET IT BE WITH ME ACCORDING TO YOUR WORD. Said yes with only a glimmer of what she was saying yes to.
I have the smallest Annunciation analogy to Mary’s great leap of faith. Mine was a genuine baby step, but it was a step. When I was very young and ready for bed, teeth brushed, pajamas on and ready for sleep, my Father announced that we were all going to sleep in the car. Now that made no sense, but as I remember it, I did not protest but headed out with my older brother and hopped into the back seat. We did not sleep in the car, but drove to a neighbor’s house for something that in those days was very special. Remember that there were no Saturday cartoons on television, because there was no television. A neighbor had a movie projector and was ready to show cartoons to children in the neighborhood. A tiny analogy, a minute tiptoe step of faith, made quite safe because I knew my Father and knew he loved me and could be trusted. Maybe your analogy is a better one. When have you accepted a challenge to move off into the unknown, sensing that God had a role for you to accept? Someone once said the faith cannot see around corners, but goes anyway. We need to stand in awe of Mary, woman of faith, who dared say yes to God’s plan for her, even as we stand in awe of the God who sent Gabriel to her, the God who allowed Mary’s barren cousin Elizabeth to bear a son, the God for whom nothing is impossible, not even the birth of the Messiah in a lowly stable.
Some connections leap to mind as I wrestle with the Annunciation story. One is that Mary’s YES is like that of Abraham who left all he knew to go to an unknown land, a land known to him only as the land the Lord would show him. Mary moved on into the future God would show her. Another connection is that while the Bible reflects what was a man’s world, often it is a woman to whom God reveals what is going on, his plan. Do you remember the awful story of shifty, crafty, heel-grabbing Jacob pretending to be Esau and snookering his blind father Isaac out of the blessing intended for his older twin? And do you know the story well enough to remember that God told their Mother Rebecca that the younger brother was the chosen one, and that it was with her help that Jacob not only GOT the blessing, but knew enough to get out of town before his enraged brother came after him? It delights me that in this incredible mind-boggling announcement of Jesus’ conception, in this newest of new things, the Holy One of Israel continues to make women wise. And yes, in the Elder Testament Wisdom is not only feminine, but is sometimes referred to as Lady Wisdom. Our story is the newest of new things, AND the repetition of a familiar Divine action.
Something new came to me this year, and it enriches all our familiar images of an inn with no room, a baby born in a stable, and no crib for a bed. Do you notice the radical difference between Gabriel’s description of the child to be born and the circumstances of his birth? This king who is to reign forever begins his life quite literally with those who are shut out, those for whom there is no ROOM. We are so used to cozy manger images with docile oxen and asses that we all too easily forget- that’s no place to have a baby, and an animal’s feeding trough is no a sweet cradle for a newborn. (I learned this week that ‘a tradition in England involved baking a mince pie in the shape of a manger to hold the Christ child until dinnertime when the pie was eaten. When the Puritans banned Christmas celebrations in the mid 1600s, they specifically outlawed such pies, calling them ‘Idolaterie in crust.’) I can ALMOST imagine Mary in Bethlehem crying out to Gabriel and protesting that the birth site does not fit the angel’s promise of a great son born to be king forever. A modern play called the Butterfingers Angel blamed the poor birthing arrangements on an angel that never got things right. We like Mary need to taste the bare, stark, cold, dirty labor room where Jesus is to be born. And then? First, stand in wonder, join shepherds and angels and even the dumb animals and worship the new-born child of this wonderful brave tough wise Mother Mary. And then reset our minds to have eyes and ears to catch in action the God who casts down the mighty, who raises up the lowly, who scatters the imaginations of the proud, who longs so to reconnect with us that he is willing to come into our world, born of Mary in a lowly cattle stall. Sometimes prose just will not do the trick, and I want to end our Advent with a piece of poetry that was in the 1940 Hymnal but is not in our 1982 Hymnal. The author is Jan Struther, and her words seem a powerful way for us to come to the end of this Advent and look ahead to the newest of new births. (I did not learn until preparing this sermon that Jan Struther was the pen name of an English writer, Joyce Anstruther. How fitting it is that on the day when we hear of the Annunciation and of Mary’s faith and courage, our last words were written by a woman.)
