Sermon Christmas 2011 Morgan Silbaugh
I cannot tell why he who angels worship
Should shed his love upon the sons of men.
Or why, as shepherd, he should seek the wanderers,
To bring them back, they know not how or when.
But this I know, that he was born of Mary
When Bethl’em’s manger was his only home,
And that he lived in Nazareth and labored,
And now the Savior, Savior of the world is come.
I found this Christmas hymn in a Canadian hymnal many years ago, set to the lovely Londonderry Air-known best as the tune for Danny Boy. The words live in my heart and mind, summing up the glory of Christmas and reminding me that we celebrate something wonderful that God has done to heal the break between our Creator and his human creatures. A wise man once summed it all up: WHAT WENT WRONG WITH EVE IN THE GARDEN IS HEALED IN THE WOMB OF MARY. Humility is redefined once and forever as the Holy One who inhabits eternity enters human life as a helpless baby born in a stable, where animals give birth. The Divine becomes a fully human being to woo us back and to give us some hope of learning to live in peace with one another. A Roman Catholic nun once wrote that to believe in GOd is to have an US to be in, The Incarnation, the taking on of flesh by the Divine, gives us a new and bigger US that includes all humankind. We are all adopted by Jesus’ birth into a new humanity. Desmond Tutu’s motto grows right out of this new reality: EVERYONE IS PRECIOUS, EVERYONE MATTERS. Take that to heart, please, and hear the Good News; YOU ARE PRECIOUS, YOU MATTER. Imperfect, surely, flawed, of course, less than you might be, probably- still and all you are precious, you matter.
Sometimes I do wonder if I matter, if I have done enough, learned enough, given enough, achieved enough. And a Christmas angel sings Glory to God in the Highest, and the promised peace on earth includes a gift of peace to less than perfect me. The Love that created the universe comes to us because we need it, not because we have earned it, and we can celebrate, rejoice and perhaps even lighten up a bit. Maybe we should prepare the creche for Epiphany by putting a sign on it, not saying we accept Visa and Master Card, but saying “we accept gold, myrrh, frankincense and other imperfect gifts, please bring yours.”
I recently learned from Rowan William’s book A Ray of Darkness that British television produced the 15th Century Second Shepherd’s Play some fifteen years ago. (If there is a creative arts searcher out there who could get a copy of the broadcast it would be glorious for those of us here in the colonies to be able to see it.) In the play the shepherds, clearly working class folk and not gentry, come to the cradle with their gifts.

The shepherd kneels in awe to the new-born maker of all who seeks us and presents….a bird!
The third shepherd speaks:
HAIL, DARLING DEAR, FULL OF GODHEAD!
I PRAY THEE BE NEAR WHEN I HAVE NEED,
HAIL SWEET OF THY CHEER! MY HEART WOULD BLEED/TO SEE THEE SIT HERE IN SO POOR WEED,
WITH NO PENNIES.
HAIL! PUT FORTH THY HAND.
I BRING THEE BUT A BALL:
HAVE AND PLAY THEE WITHALL,
AND GO TO THE TENNIS.
Who has not tried to give a baby the ball she is not yet ready to handle? Yet what splendid shepherd common sense to know that God born fully human among us must play, must have playthings.
These three shepherd speeches capture the glory of the Incarnation as no theological treatise or sermon can. Williams calls the gifts..”Touching: pointless, useless..and so, more eloquent than almost anything could be.” He continues “THE MAKER OF ALL REACHES OUT HIS HAND, AND TOUCHES THE BOB OF CHERRIES A WORKMAN OFFERS. AND FOR THAT REACHING OUT THERE IS NO EXCHANGE, THERE IS NO FIT RETURN WE CAN MAKE. GOD’S PURE, CAUSELESS, GRATUITOUS LOVE CAN HAVE NO ANSWER,EXCEPT SOME FAINT FUMBLING ECHO OF THAT VERY GRATUITY … THE GIFT TOO GREAT TO MAKE SENSE OF. ALL WE CAN DO, LIKE THE SHEPHERDS, IS OFFER OUR MEANINGLESS LITTLE PRESENTS. ALL WE CAN GIVE TO GOD IS THE EQUIVALENT OF WHAT THE SHEPHERDS HERE GIVE; A PACKET OF SWEETS, A BUDGIE IN A CAGE, A TENNIS BALL.”
Here in this theater town, I would love to see this all acted out, see the honest, probably dirty, low-class shepherds come, recognize Jesus for who he is and what he is, and offer their gifts. I cannot hear the power-filled speeches without being reminded of the last verse of the carol In the Bleak Midwinter WHAT CAN I GIVE HIM, POOR AS I AM?

YET WHAT I CAN I GIVE HIM, GIVE MY HEART.
The news, brothers and sisters in Christ, is good. God loves us, has come among us, seeks us, and proclaims by his new-born presence in the world he created that we and all humanity matter and are precious.
